After four hours of washing cars and some help from a local restaurant, the Ohio cheerleading squad has amassed $1,200 for the Marcellis Williamson Memorial Fund.
Williamson died April 27 from a blood clot in his lung. Many of the cheerleaders knew and admired the former Bobcat nose guard for his warm personality and desire to give back.
"Everyone that I’ve spoken with through athletics said that he was just a wonderful kid," cheerleading coach Kristin Hoskinson said. "I think this was a great way to show our support for the football program and show our respects."
Hoskinson also works at Leghorn's Restaurant, 944 E. State St. in Athens, where the car wash took place. The restaurant donated 10 percent of its sales during the 3 to 7 p.m. window Sunday, which was the time slot for the cheerleaders' fundraiser.
The team brought in $800 through the car wash, and Leghorn's gave an additional $400. That brings the total for the fund to more than $8,400. Williamson's family will choose to donate excess funds to a charity if the amount surpasses funeral costs.
