Ohio freshman catcher Cody Gaertner was named the Mid-American Conference East player of the week Monday for his efforts during the Bobcats’ weekend sweep of Northern Illinois.
He went 7-for-10 and knocked 5 RBI in the three-game series, in which Ohio (16-15, 6-3 MAC) outscored their opponents by a combined mark of 35-13. Gaertner also scored eight runs for the Bobcats.
The catcher is hitting .333 and has 14 RBI in 23 games this season. He shares time behind the plate with sophomore Kyle Dean.
Ohio had Monday off and will return to action against Ohio State in Columbus Tuesday.Â
