The Mid-American Conference hall of fame inducted a new class after being reinstated this month. That list included Ohio shortstop Mike Schmidt.
Schmidt was a four-year letterwinner from 1967-1971 and was an All-American in 1970 and 1971. Ohio appeared in the College World Series in that 1970 season.
Schmidt was the 30th overall selection in the 1971 draft. He completed his 18 year career with three National League Most Valuale Player awards, 12 All Star teams, 10 Gold Glove Awards and a World Series championship in 1980.
He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995.
Other members of the class include, Ben Curtis (Kent State, men’s golf), Herb Deromedi (Central Michigan, football), Wayne Embry (Miami, men’s basketball), Karen Fitzpatrick (Ball State, field hockey) and Bob Nichols (Toledo, men’s basketball).
