Ohio freshman guard Kiyanna Black was named the Mid-American Conference East player of the week by the league office on Monday.
Black scored 23 points in the Bobcats’ 68-62 victory against Xavier Saturday. She shot 75 percent from beyond the arc and 50 percent from the field on 9-18 shooting.
“(Black’s) learned what she’s capable of doing,” said Ohio coach Semeka Randall after the game. “She’s starting to learn how special she can be for this basketball team.”
Black’s 23-point performance was a career high and a team high for the season.
She also pulled down five rebounds in the game, which doubled her season average.
Black has been a huge asset to the team this season, and was even more important against Xavier because junior guard Shavon Robinson was sidelined with an ankle injury.
Black has scored in double-figures seven different times this season.
Ohio’s next game is on Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. against Akron. The Bobcats will host the Zips in their first MAC game of the season at The Convo.
