Before he could log a minute for the Ohio basketball team, redshirt freshman D.J. Wingfield's career playing basketball is likely over.

Coach Jim Christian said today that the Cincinnati-native would be declared medically disqualified as a knee surgery Wingfield underwent in the summer was unsuccessful.

"He was practicing (during the season), but he would just never respond," Christian said. "They did another MRI later in the year and the doctor just said the surgery never took. There were particles in there and it was just a shame. Just a shame. He just said he's not going to be able to do it. "

Christian also said that Wingfield's scholarship will be honored.

Wingfield was a four-time Cincinnati All-City and All-District player. The talented wing was also a first team All-State player his first three seasons and earned second-team honors his senior year.

Fellow freshman Antonio Campbell has no doubt that Wingfield will explore every avenue to find his way back onto a basketball court in the future.

"D.J. is a hardworker," Campbell said. "He'll do anything he can to play basketball again."

The departure of Wingfield opens up another scholarship for the Bobcats, giving Christian two open slots to fill as he continues to recruit this spring.
