Ohio University will conduct geologic testing over the next two weeks to move forward with its commitment to stop burning coal by the end of 2015, according to a university news release.

The tests may also cause road closures, the release said, though exactly where is unclear.

In order to stop burning coal, improvements need to be made to the local gas distribution system owned and operated by Columbia Gas, the release said. This will include construction of a new gas line that will link up with the existing gas distribution system for the Columbia Gas service area for Athens.

As part of the design process, a contractor from Columbia Gas will perform core sampling starting Tuesday in order to better understand the geological conditions along the proposed route, the release said. 10 to 15 four-inch holes will be drilled between 20 and 50 feet deep along the proposed route. This will take place from Dairy Lane near The Ridges to the Lausche Heating Plant on West Green.

The process may cause traffic delays for roadways located near sites where testing is taking place. OU said the holes will be filled with native materials and will not be a threat to drinking water in the City of Athens.

The university said the project is expected to last approximately two weeks.
