Super Smash Bros for the 3DS is a solid, fast-paced handheld that is entertaining and fun, despite the minor flaws.

Every generation of consoles there’s always one game that gratifies gamers with four player, rapid pace brawling.

That game is Super Smash Bros.

After numerous complaints of Nintendo’s previous installment, Super Smash Bros: Brawl, criticized the characters’ speed and broken combo system, Nintendo effectively balanced and fixed the cast of Super Smash Bros for the 3DS.

Even though the system implemented in Super Smash Bros is relatively flawed on multiple accounts, Nintendo continues to make an entertaining, multiplayer orientated game for the past 15 years.

Gameplay:

Unlike Brawl, the new Super Smash Bros balances more fast-paced characters with heavy hitters, as the games speed is increased tremendously in this installment.

In terms of playing it on a handheld, Super Smash Bros takes a few tries to adapt to. I found myself accidentally pressing the wrong buttons a few times, but with that being stated, I really didn’t have much trouble playing on a smaller console.

A lot of players feel very fluid, including Little Mac, Link and Charizard but some gimmick characters like Olimar, Duck Hunt and Wii Fit Trainer feel clunky and awkward at times. It won’t take players long to figure out who’s interesting to use and who is just a “filler” character.

Nintendo also added more playing modes and maps in it’s new installment. Most maps are very functional and are fairly distinct. If it’s Living Room, Gerudo Valley or Pictochat, there is multiple new maps that will fascinate players.

Another minor knock back to the new installment has always been a negative to the series. Super Smash Bros is just not as fun during single player than when you are playing with multiple friends.

Even though I love playing new characters like Greninja, it’s difficult to sit around and play on my own.

Graphics:

Super Smash Bros looks great on the 3DS. The cel shading on characters looks smooth and characters really pop off the screen.

In the few hundreds of battles I played through, I found zero glitches.

Final Verdict:

Super Smash Bros for the 3DS is a beautiful, solid handheld game that really brings back a fast-paced formula that was created by the original predecessors. Despite it’s minor flaws with gimmicky characters and lack of single player gameplay, it’s a worthy pickup for any gamer.
