Miley Cyrus releases a dreamy, pop album with power vocals and trippy themes.

After Miley Cyrus went off the grid musically for more than a year, she shocked all the MTV Video Music Awards viewers Sunday by performing a new song and releasing her new album Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz for free online.

I have to start off by saying Cyrus’ previous album Bangerz was not particularly my favorite. There were a few catchy songs on it, but I wasn’t OBSESSED. Therefore, when she announced the release of her new album on the VMAs, I was surprised and excited, but I didn’t have huge expectations. This assumption was shattered the moment I started listening to Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz.

The 23-track album displays the perfect balance between Cyrus’ creative mind and her incredible talent. The vibrant vocals, dreamy beats and catchy melodies are everything I could’ve asked for in a Miley Cyrus album. And did I already mention that it's FREE? (I’m a broke college student who is very pleased by this.)

The first song on the album is “Dooo It!” which is what Cyrus performed the night of the VMAs. This song introduces her layered vocal style and the electronic dream pop beats that are cohesive throughout the entire album. The next two songs, “Karen Don’t Be Sad” and “The Floyd Song (Sunrise),” bring in peaceful, lullaby-like vocals. As the album progresses, her voice reminds me of both Lana Del Rey and Madonna, but every song still showcases that Cyrus vibe.

One of my favorite songs on the album is track number five, “Space Boots.” Cyrus employs a somber tone, which can be found in other songs throughout the album. The song portrays her missing a romantic partner. Instead of taking the power ballad route with the beat, however, she uses electronic effects and cool percussion to keep it catchy and fresh.

Track number seven “BB Talk” oddly reminds me of her old song “7 Things” with a revamped flair. She starts off the song complaining about the annoying things a boy does (such as using baby talk), which correlates to the part of “7 Things” where she expresses the same grievances. At the end of both songs, she recognizes the pros of the boy and realizes he's not so bad.

Track number nine “Bang Me Box.” is the sexual song that we’d expect from Cyrus, but the beat is SO good. It’s very funky and makes you want to dance embarrassingly in the mirror. This is hard to do with roommates, so I had to dance quietly with headphones on while my roommate took a nap. Yes, I am very lame.

The artists Cyrus features on the album fit perfectly with the dreamy rainbow feel. Sarah Barthel of Phantogram is featured in Miley’s song, “Slab of Butter (Scorpion)” which is undoubtedly my favorite song on the album (for now). It makes me feel like I’m floating through virtual space while Cyrus and Barthel both sing cryptic lyrics such as, “I feel like a slab of butter, melting in the sun. Oppression melts away, you and I are one.”

Big Sean is also featured in the 17th track of the album, “Tangerine.” The song is quiet but captivating, evolving through a combination of Cyrus's soft vocals and Big Sean's mellow verse.

“Tiger Dreams,” the following song, features a duet between Ariel Pink and Miley Cyrus with a similar contemplative vibe, which almost made me fall asleep (in a good way).

The final song of the album is called “Twinkle Song” and this is the power ballad I’ve been waiting for. It’s “The Climb” with a deeper, more mysterious meaning. Toward the end, Cyrus poses the powerful question “What does it mean?” repeatedly, giving me some serious goosebumps.

Cyrus and Her Dead Petz is the pop album I didn’t know I needed in my life until it was here. I think everyone should listen to this album and float away to Miley-Land. Plus it’s FREE so why wouldn’t you? We all need a good dose of Miley.
