The latest Pretty Little Liars episodes has lots of love and few answers.

The latest episode of Pretty Little Liars, “New Guys, New Lies,” is filled with romance for most of the liars and, of course, old habits die hard, so there’s a bit of awkwardness taking place. For anyone who is totally invested in the liars’ love lives, this episode is super exciting. And if not, there is new a drama to fill the void left from last week’s boring episode.

The love starts off early with a scene of Spencer (Troian Bellisario) and Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) in bed together. The moment is destroyed when Spencer checks her phone and sees a lovely text from the “new A” and several concerned ones from the other liars. She leaves before Caleb even wakes up and is off to The Radley to discuss the situation. Again, why is The Radley the meeting point? It used to be an insane asylum!

Hanna (Ashley Benson) is being rather bold this season, so it’s not too surprising that she texts the new A asking, “Do I know you?” There is soon a response of “Yes,” and all of the girls are pinning it on Sara Harvey (Dre Davis) — especially since Alison (Sasha Pieterse) is claiming to be out of town with Dr. Rollins (Huw Collins).

The girls pause from momentarily panicking to listen to Lorenzo (Travis Winfrey) on a newscast. Apparently, the suspect list is dwindling and the murder weapon is known. The new A gives them a little spoiler — it’s a 9-iron. Even more confusion takes place when Aria’s dad enters The Radley. Maybe he has a new beau too?

Caleb is off to see Spencer’s ex-lover and his best friend Toby (Keegan Allen), who is dating and building a house for his new love Yvonne (Kara Royster), who is the daughter of the woman Spencer’s mom is running against. While it probably can’t get more complicated, it does become more awkward when Toby half-heartedly tells Caleb that it’s fine he’s seeing Spencer.

In the meantime, Aria (Lucy Hale) is dying to find answers and is trying to break into Ezra’s apartment. She enlists Emily as bait so she can steal the key. While Emily (Shay Mitchell) is chatting with the cute barista Sabrina (Lulu Brud), Aria is snooping through Ezra’s apartment. She puts her fingerprints all over his golf clubs but is relieved when she finds the 9-iron.

Of course she has to keep going and listens to Ezra’s messages. What a lovely coincidence. There is a message from her dad on the machine about that night. Byron (Chad Lowe) wants to talk to Ezra (Ian Harding) about what happened the night of the murder. So after all this time, it’s possible a parent could be a murderer. Way to go, Rosewood.

Hanna is coming clean to her mom and her boyfriend about the tape. After admitting it to Ms. Marin (Laura Leighton), she finds out that the security system keeps a backup of the footage A.K.A. Hanna and the other liars are going to be looking extremely guilty. After telling Jordan (David Coussins), they make a plan to meet with his family’s lawyer.

Spencer is trying to cope with a lot of things at once. She sees Toby holding an engagement ring right before she has to go out and host a press conference of sorts with Yvonne. Although they seem to get along well, A is poking at the engagement and Spencer is forced to paint on a smile.

Thankfully, she does something intelligent and later gives Caleb her phone so he can hunt down the location where the texts are coming from.

Emily, on the other hand, is the only one without luck this episode. Aria interrupted her conversation with Sabrina because of what she found in Ezra’s apartment. Aria also FORGOT to return the key that goes to Ezra’s apartment, which ruins Emily’s chances. Then, when Emily’s with Aria at Byron’s house, there is a creepy old man staring into the window. He’s wearing black eyeglasses, a blue jacket, a blue hat, a blue tie and a light blue shirt. Strange.

Caleb and Spencer are on an adventure tracking the phone signal. Caleb says it was rather simple, which isn’t a coincidence. The couple ends up at an unlocked storage unit. Inside is a metal trash containing the old black A suit and phone with a new text reading “I don’t lurk in the shadows. I hide in plain sight.”

At the end, things get a little hectic.

  • Aria finds her dad’s golf clubs and the 9-iron is, in fact, missing.
  • Hanna is off the hook with the video because Mama Marin stole it. (The real question is why doesn’t a security company keep its official documents more secure?)
  • Hanna then decides to break into the system AGAIN to see if Byron and Ezra are staying there. She finds out only Sara Harvey is — who has had a “Do Not Disturb” sign up for two days.
  • Toby also tells Spencer that their friendship was easier when she was in D.C., and implies he’s ready for her to go.

Finally, the liars find out the picture new A sent them of the 9-iron came from The Radley because it matched the carpet. Then, Aria gets a call form her dad saying he needs to speak with her right now, even though she’s with friends.

Then the creepy old man in blue closes the episode. In plain sight, he walks by the liars, out the door and climbs into the oh-so-familiar black car. Then the man pulls off his face to reveal it was a mask all along. Apparently, the liars are in a Scooby Doo movie now.
