Democratic incumbent Mark Sullivan firmly maintained his seat among the Athens County Commissioners, securing yesterday's election against Republican Fred Davis by more than 3,500 votes.
Spending the night at home with his family, Sullivan said he heard about the final results while he was watching presidential election coverage on TV with his wife.
Most of the time I felt pretty good about my chances
said Sullivan, who has served as a commissioner for the past six years.
Sullivan won the position with about 58 percent of the county's votes -about 14,000 votes -while Davis had about 42 percent with about 10,500 votes.
I think we're comfortable with the campaign we ran said Davis, who is a 23-year member of the Alexander Local School District Board of Education. Though we got out and emphasized what we thought were the issues apparently our perspective on issues was not the same as the voters. We weren't in the majority.
Sullivan said the public observing the positive things the commissioners have done during his time in office helped him win this election.
We're not perfect
but we've been sincere about what we do; we're working hard
and most people voted based on that
said Sullivan, of Millfield.
The main goals Sullivan said he has in front of him during his upcoming term include working on economic development, continuing water and sewer infrastructure improvements and focusing on issues specifically affecting families and the elderly in Athens County.
Davis, an Athens resident, said he has no plans of running for public office again, but he said Sullivan ran a good campaign.
Campaigns give people a choice
and you have to be open-minded enough to understand that if your views aren't shared by the majority that you have to accept that
he said.
