Mom’s Weekend approaches Athens

Beginning Friday, campus will not only be bustling with students amidst fest season, but Bobcat moms from all around will be taking Athens by storm.

While there is plenty of non-university affiliated mischief and fun for visitors to partake in, many student organizations have planned events surrounding the annual weekend.

Black Student Cultural Programming Board: Mom’s Weekend Expo

BSCPB will be hosting an expo in the Multicultural Center and 2nd floor Atrium, from 12 P.M to 4 P.M, on Saturday. The event will feature food, line dancing massages and more.

Cydney Granger, a senior studying business, is the president of the Black Student Cultural Programming Board and planned the event last year as the director of special events.

“We're going to do a sip and paint with OU-themed mocktails and then there will also be a masseuse who's giving out back massages, that's all for free,” Granger said.

Granger encourages people interested in the event to follow the organization on Instagram for more information.

This annual event will be held right in the middle of the fun spread around campus, making it a prime spot for people to come and go throughout the afternoon.

Latinx Service Coalition: Salsa Caliente

LSC is putting on a night of dancing, raffles and refreshments in Baker Center Room 219 on Friday evening from 6-9 P.M.

This event is co-sponsored by El 787, OU’s Puerto Rican heritage club. In collaboration the two clubs will also be supporting a fundraiser for TECHO Argentina

“They rebuild homes for people who have lost their homes in natural disasters and things of that sort,” Jordon Lebron, a freshman studying entrepreneurship, said. “So we're just doing a little bit of a bake sale for them to help raise some money so that (it) can go toward what their organization stands for and what they do.”

Lebron hopes this event draws more people to the organization.

“(I’m looking forward to) meeting a lot more people, you can never go wrong with meeting so many people and having an impact on so many people's lives,” Lebron said.

Epsilon Omicron Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma, Fraternity Incorporated: Mom’s Cabaret

In addition to the expo, there will be a cabaret held to entertain the mothers visiting campus. Phi Beta Sigma has put together a program complete with modeling, dancing, singing and more on Saturday evening.

The cabaret will be from• 6-8 p.m. in Nelson Commons. F.A.C.E.S modeling will be one of the featured organizations in the program.

“F.A.C.E.S is very excited for the opportunity to be able to come together for the moms and we've been working hard (on) putting the show together,” Lailah Cooper, a sophomore studying journalism, said. “It's a lot of older music. So we're hoping that it's a tribute to them and a way for them to reminisce.”

In addition to F.A.C.E.S the Athens Black Contemporary Dancers and Hadiya Ray will be performing in addition to music by DJ A-Roc and more.

These are just three events in a weekend full of programming by organizations all over campus. Activities are being held by the Women’s Panhellenic Association, Housing and Residence Life and the Campus Involvement Center.
