TV Review: Let’s hope the season finale is better than this week’s episode of ‘AHS: 1984’

American Horror Story: 1984 audiences are praying for a really gripping season finale next week because so far, no one is impressed. The season started out with a promising feeling: the ’80s slasher tropes, the rockstar additions to the cast and the idea that real horror elements would be the focus.

However, it has turned out to be another ghost and satanic-centered season with little plot or character development.

Last week’s episode ended with Brooke (Emma Roberts) and Dede (Angelica Ross) seemingly defeating Dylan McDermott’s serial killing character, Benjamin (John Caroll Lynch), killing himself and Trevor (Matthew Morrison) being reunited with Montana (Billie Lourde).

This week followed Brooke and Dede’s journey back to Camp Redwood, where they encounter a journalist from the National Enquirer who threatens to expose them for their true identities. They bargain with her and tell her they’ll take her to Camp Redwood and show her what really happened in return for keeping their identities a secret.

McDermott’s character ends up being saved by a woman he ultimately kills and heads to Camp Redwood. It’s there where he interrupts a fight between Benjamin and Ramirez (Zach Villa), letting Benjamin get away. Ramirez wants to kill McDermott’s character, but instead, they team up to kill Benjamin and anyone else along the way.

Brooke decides to kill the reporter, and Dede tries to stop her. However, Ramirez kills her, anyway.

Benjamin is trying to get to Ramirez to kill him, but all of the camp counselors and innocent people he killed keep killing him as a form of torture.

Meanwhile, Trevor and Montana are feeling the love with each other. Trevor tells Montana that he loves her, and he wants to stay at Camp Redwood with her forever. At first, Montana agrees, but after Benjamin exposes the fact that Montana used to date Ramirez, she convinces herself that she isn’t worthy of love.

“I don’t deserve happiness,” Montana said.

Trevor tells her that she’s the only thing that makes him happy, but she tells him to leave her alone.

The episode ends without much explanation. Benjamin is sucked into the water by a weird-looking zombie, and when he wakes up, he is with his dead brother, Bobby, and his mother (Lily Rabe).

The season finale next week was teased with a lot of spoilers, so it’ll be interesting to see if it makes up for the dragging past few episodes.
