Academic Advancement Center expanding tutoring, writing center for students

This semester, the Academic Advancement Center will be expanding its services in response to demands from previous semesters.

More than 5,000 OU students use the center’s resources, which include tutoring and the Writing Center.

“This semester we are building on already successful programs,” said Cynthia King, student academic advancement director.

One of those services is offering peer tutors, students who have already completed a course or are enrolled in the class with a grade of “B” or better.

“For me tutoring is about building relationships with students and being a part of their success,” said Nick Loree, one of the peer tutors. “Sometimes I’m more proud and concerned with my students’ grades than my own. We want to serve this campus to the best of our ability and give kids the best chance possible for success.”

The Academic Advancement Center is hiring tutors for Spring Semester. Positions start at minimum wage and increase with experience. Applications can be downloaded from its website.

“One of the best things about tutoring is the feeling that you’re doing something really useful — helping other students do well in their classes,” said Elliot Kaplan, a junior studying mathematics. “I think that in a lot of other jobs, it’s tough to see a connection between your performance and results.”

Other than peer tutoring, the center also offers Supplemental Instruction, where a student sits in on a class and helps facilitate help for those in need.

The Academic Advancement Center runs the Writing Center, which aims to help students with papers and resumes. Students can make an appointment or go to one of the center’s walk-in hours.
