The anticipated trailer for season two of the book series turned TV adaptation, centering Greek demigods and mythological creatures, “Percy Jackson & The Olympians” was released Nov. 6.
The trailer shows us the start of the newest journey for our main protagonists, along with some new and recurring faces. Satyr Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri), protector of our main protagonist, Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell), has been captured by a sea monster while on a quest.
Jackson, the son of Poseidon, receives a prophetic dream showing him Grover’s capture while home in New York. He is met by Annabeth Chase (Leah Sava’ Jeffries), the daughter of Athena, on a street somewhere in New York, where Chase says, “You didn’t have the dream?”
Jackson would reply, “The one about Grover?” while Chase says, “About camp.” Here we learn that not only is Grover in trouble, but the entire fate of Camp Halfblood. Luke Castellan (Charlie Bushnell), the son of Hermes, is back as the current antagonist of the series. He was seen to poison Thalia’s tree, which leaves the camp vulnerable due to its protective barrier stemming from the tree.
We are told that Jackson and Chase will have to travel to the Sea of Monsters to save Grover and the camp. We also get flashes of the daughter of Ares, Clarissa La Rue (Dior Goodjohn), and her band of undead soldiers, who will also be taking on the mission of traveling to the Sea of Monsters.
We get a flash of Castellan’s face as the menacing voice of Kronos (Nick Boraine) commands someone to “kill the son of Poseidon.” This leads watchers to the impending danger that our protagonists will be in during this long journey.
The trailer ends with Jackson trying to walk on a frantically rocking boat in the middle of the ocean, being attacked by a sea monster as Chase yells his name.
For those who have read the books or seen the movies, the storyline is familiar. With the reimagining of the characters, we are also introduced to some new characters from the series.
Daniel Diemerplays Tyson, Jackson’s paternal half-cyclops brother, who joins Chase and Jackson on their journey to save Grover. The Grey Sisters, also known as the fates, are played by Cindy Piper, Joyce Robbins and La Nein Harrison. Still using their magical taxi to travel in the blink of an eye to where their customers need to go, we see our protagonists use this to their benefit to jump to wherever the fates prophecy leads them.
We also get a first look at Tamara Smart as Thalia Grace, the daughter of Zeus, whose transformed body protects the camp, as she appears to be fighting two menacing figures.
Reprising their roles as godly parents are Toby Stephens as Posideon and Adam Copelandas Ares, who are both pictured with their respective children, seemingly giving advice and aid. Watchers are also introduced to Lin-Manuel Miranda as Hermes.
While not pictured in the trailer, characters Nico di Angelo (Levi Chrisopulos), Bianca di Angelo (Olive Abercrombie), Chris Rodriguez (Kevin Chacon) and Zoë Nightshade (Saara Chaudry) were cast. Some notable star power has been added to the cast of Olympians that will make appearances along the journey: Dafne Keen as Artemis and Kate McKinnon as Aphrodite.
While the degree to which these characters will appear in the upcoming season, leaked behind-the-scenes shows what is believed to be Bianca asking Jackson about the whereabouts of Nico, while fighting someone or something that is out of frame.
There have also been behind-the-scenes clips of Jackson chasing Nico in different locations, one scene in which Jackson yells, “Nico, stop! Nico.” Jackson and Chase are also seen in a very emotionally intimate scene together, which has garnered fan excitement.
TV adaptations usually take some creative leeway. This next installment of the Percy Jackson series seems to be leaning heavily on its source material.
The upcoming season will premiere with two episodes, Dec. 10.
