On Saturday, Feb. 14, the Ohio University men's basketball team pulled out a great win. It was a close game up until the end, when the Bobcats racked up another home win.
While this battle unfolded there was another team win unfolding in the stands of The Convo. Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity and The Waste Busters, in cooperation with the Athletics Department, Custodial Maintenance, Campus Recycling and most importantly, the OU Bobcat fans, held the first Convocation Adopt-a-Game. Two people teamed up for every two sections in The Convo. Each had a bag; a clear one for recyclables and the other had an opaque trash bag. During time outs and breaks in the basketball game, these two-person teams walked the aisles in the two sections collecting recyclables and trash from the fans. There were 25 people in all collecting from 23 or more sections.
The bulk of the waste generated at the basketball games is made up of recyclables, especially when you include all of the cardboard from the vendors. Recyclables include plastic cups and bottles, paper cups, cup holders, pizza and popcorn boxes and programs.
Two sections per two people turned out to be pretty easy to handle, so some of the pairs covered more sections. In the end, most of the waste generated from the game was recycled instead of disposed of as trash - another home victory!
The goal was to recover as many recyclables as possible and to plug RecycleMania, an intercollegiate recycling competition between OU and 16 other schools, which is going into its third week out of 10 total.

We also wanted to see if we can help reduce costs of collection of this material after the game. The fans in the stands completed the teamwork by passing out their recyclables and trash to their area's collectors. What a team effort it was, too. Everyone helped to make a great Bobcat win even better.
