Maybe It's Just Me: Athens' Halloween is overrated, has nothing to do with the holiday

Bubble vests, Bluetooth, Hillary Clinton, bottled water, iPhone and Paris Hilton. Just a few things that are extremely overrated. I almost forgot one: Ohio University's Halloween party, which is famous for being famous. What is the big deal anyway? Tens of thousands of people dress up in crazy costumes and walk back and forth and up and down Court Street in a drunken stupor? Oooo, sounds like fun.

I have managed for the past two years skillfully to avoid Halloween in Athens. That's right. I have never been here. When I am home and people ask me about the infamous party, I reveal that I have never been. You would think I said I have never been to class. I don't celebrate Halloween, anyway. It's a pagan holiday, and I am a Christian. Besides, isn't that when spirits are supposed to contact the physical world? No thanks. A dead person has nothing to say to me. And that's all Halloween is, a celebration of everything that is dead ' tombstones, skeletons, witches, warlocks, gargoyles, demons (some call them ghosts), jack-o-lanterns (what is that evil pumpkin?), and etc., none of which I am at all interested in. What is with the obsession with death when you're alive, anyway? -
