Volleyball player Janice Matacic thought that she would be backpacking in Europe or visiting her sister in Asia this fall.
But the defensive specialist, who was academically considered a senior last year, instead decided to put her plans for a trip across the world on hold and return to the Bobcats in a unique opportunity to play her second senior year.
Last year was supposed to be my last year of college
and I was going to finish up school in the summer because I had four classes left Matacic said. After spring break (head coach) Geoff (Carlston) asked me to come back
and there were conflicts with my classes during the summer. It all fell into place where I could take classes and still play.
Matacic was able to play another season because she had only played for the Bobcats for two of her four years of eligibility prior to this season. Carlston said the idea of her coming back arose one day after a spring volleyball practice when the two were discussing her future.
We were catching up
and she mentioned how much she missed playing and being a part of the team
he said. One thing led to another
and in three or four days she was back on the team.
The defensive specialist said that her second senior year has been has been a blessing that few people get to experience.
I don't want to leave
Matacic said. I'm happy to be back and get a second chance
which not a lot of people get. The biggest thing has been that I've been able to do what I want to do and what I love to do.
Although rejoining the team was a different feeling, Matacic said that her teammates embraced her return with open arms.
It was kind of weird coming back at first
but everyone was so welcoming
she said. We all get along so well
