From the editor's desk: This week: letters, quotes and at least one typo

Hi, everyone.

To students and faculty, I hope your first week of the semester wasn’t too painful. Don’t let syllabus week lull you into a false sense of security — I have a feeling this semester is going to be a tough one to make it through, especially when the warm weather finally arrives.

I’d like to take this opportunity to discuss a few topics that have come across my desk this week.

In Monday’s edition of The Post, Sports Editor Chad Lindskog wrote about former swimming and diving head coach Greg Werner, who was fired in October with little apparent warning. The next day, Werner sent us a letter clarifying that the team did not win 11 Mid-American Conference championships under his leadership; Werner can be credited with four championships.

Though the incorrect tally is stated in the second sentence of his biography on the Ohio Athletics website and had printed numerous times in The Post before, we still ran a correction in Tuesday’s newspaper and take responsibility for the mistake. Reporters should not take information parlayed on a university website as irrefutable. As the old journalism adage goes, “If your mother says she loves you, check it out.”

In other news, Associate Editor Haylee Pearl, who curates the opinion page, brought the views of people like you, dear reader, to Page 2. Though many people choose to send letters for publication, some don’t always have enough to say to quite reach 500 words. So, Zane Parsons went out and sought your opinions.

With that in mind, we thought it would be interesting to get the average student’s opinion of former Student Senate President Nick Southall, especially after his arrest and subsequent resignation. Though some might think we selectively chose the answers we published about him, most students didn’t actually recognize his name. Interpret that as you will…

Finally, to Dr. Dru Riley Evarts, I apologize on behalf of the staff for adding a superfluous “s” to the Scripps College of Communication. A sharp eye, as always.

As always, if you have questions, comments, concerns, quarrels, quandaries, queries, please let us know. We’re always in Baker 325, and you can shoot me an email at rc348710@ohiou.edu.

Thank you, and goodnight.
