Disney’s California theme parks lay off 28,000 employees due to COVID-19; see how Twitter reacted to the first presidential debate

Today is Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2020. Here’s what you need to know:

Good morning,

Disney’s California theme parks were forced to lay off 28,000 employees across several divisions of work, including parks, experiences and consumer products, due to the ongoing pandemic.

Both Disneyland and California Adventure, located in Anaheim, California, remain closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, opposed to other Disney parks in various locations, such as Florida, Paris, Shanghai, Japan and Hong Kong that have reopened to a limited capacity.

Josh D’Amaro, head of parks at Disney, along with his team, had to make the difficult decision to cut employees after suffering immensely from the pandemic. Just last year, 37% of the company’s $69.6 billion in total revenue came from products, park visitors and their experiences.

Commonly, Disney was not able to keep a full staff while preparing to reopen to a smaller crowd that, as a result, would not require as many essential workers. D’Amaro said around 67% of the 28,000 laid-off workers were part-time employees.
