A discussion on marriage equality will take place at the Athena Cinema.
For years, LGBT individuals have been fighting for equal rights in the United States. Now, the Supreme Court is overseeing cases that involve marriage equality, a right that would open up many doors for same-sex couples and the LGBT community.
The Ohio University Center for Law, Justice & Culture, the LGBT Center, the Women’s Center, the English department, Student Senate and the sociology and anthropology departments cosponsored “Marriage Equality and the Supreme Court: The Plaintiffs and Their Stories” that will bring the faces of the fight for marriage equality to campus.
The event will take place at the Athena Cinema on Tuesday.
The couples that have submitted their cases for marriage equality will be on campus as part of a panel discussion. Delfin Bautista, director of the LGBT Center, said the event will help put faces to the cases. It’s also an opportunity to hear their stories.
Bautista said that the importance of these cases could effect much more than just Ohio and that the hope is that it will build momentum for the equality movement. The overturn of the ban on same-sex marriage in Ohio could push the law for marriage equality across the country as well.
The groups involved in the event hope that the conversations at the panel will help spark a discussion in our community and keep the fight for equality on all levels going, Bautista said.
“Hopefully, this will bring people to put pressure on their state representatives,” Bautista said. “It will be an opportunity for our relationship, our family, to be treated with the same respect as heterosexual couples.”
The event is set to take place at the Athena Cinema at 4 p.m.
