Poet James Harms will give a public reading from his work at 7:30 p.m. today in Galbreath Chapel on University Terrace.
Harms is the director of the creative writing program at West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va. He has published five collections; the most recent, this year's Freeways and Aqueducts
navigates through the landscapes of the west to understand the machinery of Los Angeles and then returns to his home in the east, according to a press release from Ohio University Communications and Marketing.
The reading will be presented by the Program in Creative Writing of the Department of English and is free and open to the public. A brief reception and book signing will follow immediately.
Harms' previous collections include Quarters (2001), The Joy Addict (1998), Modern Ocean (1992) and the limited-edition volume East of Avalon (2000). He has received grants from the West Virginia and Pennsylvania art commissions and recently was named a Benedum Distinguished Scholar, The Eberly College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teacher, The Eberly College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Researcher and The Carnegie Foundation/CASE United States Teacher of the Year for West Virginia, according to West Virginia University's English department Web site (http://www.as.wvu.edu/english/department/faculty/jharms.html). 17
