It is rare when the Ohio baseball team is more likely to play an early season game at home than it is on the road. But that's been the case so far for the Bobcats, who play host to West Virginia State today at Bob Wren Stadium.
The Bobcats (1-2) were snowed out of last weekend's series against Tennessee Tech, so they have had only one series thus far. Ohio, however, was able to practice on the field of Bob Wren Stadium for the first time during the weekend.
Only we would get snowed out of games three states below us
Ohio coach Joe Carbone said.
The Bobcats used the good home weather for an intra-squad game Saturday.
Ohio will send pitcher Chris Bova out to start. It is his second start of the season. He threw 4 1/3 innings against Western Kentucky and allowed five runs on four hits.
Bova probably will not pitch too long, Carbone said. That is because it is important for the Bobcats' hurlers to log some innings before the team gets too close to the Mid-American Conference schedule. Carbone said he expected to use Bova for three-to-four innings because he wanted to start him this weekend when the Bobcats travel to play UNC-Greensboro.
Outfielder Phil Sabatini, catcher Ben Crabtree and designated hitter Anthony Gressick will man the middle of Ohio's batting order today. They combined for 11 hits, two home runs and seven runs batted in against Western Kentucky.
The Yellow Jackets are 1-1 following a split with Alderson Broaddus. They were able to take advantage of pleasant weather in order to play a pair of games.
