Trick-or-treaters visit Athens' homes

Warm temperatures and clear skies made a perfect night for Spiderman, witches and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to get plenty of candy during Athens trick-or-treat.

Four-year-old Alex Botello, who dressed as a fire truck, trick-or-treated with his parents. Botello's costume, which he made with his father, had flashing lights, and the bed of his truck held his candy.

We needed to paint (the fire truck) like this

he said of his red and gray truck. Botello had to choose between a fire truck and Spiderman, but the fire truck made the final cut.

Displaying his bouncing skills, 4-year-old Eric Robinson dressed as Tigger from Winnie the Pooh. Robinson was inspired to be Tigger from the new movie, Frankenpooh.

I got a tail! Robinson said, showing off his tail. He dressed as Tigger so he could have his face painted, he said.

Keith and Ellen Peterson handed out candy at their home on Morris Street. The Petersons have been treating the trick-or-treaters in their neighborhood since they moved there in 1983, Keith Peterson said.

It's fun to see the little ones in their costumes he said.

Ellen Peterson said she was pleased to see families out trick-or-treating together.

We're about safety she said.

A party at the Athens Community Center followed trick-or-treat. Rockin' Reggie, a disc jockey, provided music for the party, and Ohio University varsity athletes helped run games such as a basketball free-throw contest, putt-putt golf and a bean bag toss.

There was also a twisting contest to the song The Twist and a costume contest judged by members of Circle K at OU.

Fred Ray, OU senior and a football player, ran a putt-putt game. Ray said he had a good time playing with the kids.

I enjoy this

he said. The best costume he said he saw was a fire truck.

Five-year-old Tanner Vermillion, who was dressed as Leonardo from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, won a prize at the free-throw game.

Vermillion, a kindergartner at Morrison Elementary, said he had a good time at the party and got a lot of candy trick-or-treating.

The City of Athens and the Athens Kiwanis Club sponsored the party and other businesses made donations, said Kevin Schwartzhoff, director of Athens parks and recreation.

A lot of local businesses donate candy or prizes

he said.

About 250 to 300 children and their families from Athens County usually come to the party, which has been held for about twenty years, Schwartzhoff said.
