As a life-long Democrat, there are a few times over the decades that I have crossed party lines and voted for the local Republican candidate based on his or her qualifications. That is absolutely the case in the Athens County commissioners race between Republican Randy Mace and Democrat Chris Chmiel.
The decision to vote for Randy Mace is based on logic and not on party affiliation. Randy started the 911 emergency service in our county, which led to the same service in seven other counties, which has been an incredible contribution to our county. Randy also ran the Athens County Emergency Agency for 15 years and was chosen as one of 60 emergency management professionals to be chosen for the U.S. Olympic staff. On top of these qualifications, Randy has offered to donate 10 percent of his income if elected to local charitable organizations and will encourage other Athens officials to do the same. That offer is remarkable, and I sure hope Randy sticks to this offer if elected.
While Chris Chmiel’s creation of the Paw Paw Festival, building his own home and being a sustainable farmer are wonderful activities, Randy Mace’s experience and dedication to the county far outweigh his opponent’s. This life-long Dem will be voting across party lines for the more qualified Republican candidate Randy Mace for Athens County commissioner!
