Men indicted for kidnapping of BGSU student; motive unknown

Two men were indicted Monday for kidnapping a Bowling Green State University student in Athens, a story that has gained attention statewide.

Robert Norris, 36, of Zanesville and Scott Stevens, 36, of Columbus were indicted by a grand jury for the Athens County Common Pleas Court Monday morning for the kidnapping and robbery of Kristin Wisler.

Norris has been charged with aggravated robbery and two counts of kidnapping. His defense attorney will be Herman Carson.

Stevens has been charged with complicity to aggravated robbery and two counts of complicity to kidnapping. His defense attorney will come from the public defender's office. The attorneys for both men are court appointed.

The indictments stem from Wisler's kidnapping, which occurred Sunday, Jan. 16. Athens Police Chief Rick Mayer said Wisler was walking on North Congress Street when one of the two men grabbed her and shoved her into their car.

After being abducted, Wisler was driven for about 45 minutes to a residence in Morgan County, Mayer said.

After spending time at the residence, Wisler was driven back toward Athens, at which point Athens County Sheriff Deputy Jim Heater spotted the car with Norris, Stevens and Wisler in it, Mayer said.

Police still are investigating motives for the kidnapping.

All charges are first-degree felonies with a minimum of a three-year sentence and a maximum of 10 for each count.

The men will be arraigned on Feb. 2. There will be no preliminary hearing, said county Prosecutor C. David Warren.

Judge Michael Ward presided over the indictment.
