A Women's Studies major for a bachelor of arts degree at Ohio University is in its final stages of approval.
M. Kathleen Rose-Grippa, chair of the University Curriculum Council's Programs Committee, presented an official proposal for such a degree to the council yesterday.
Audience members commented that it was good to finally see the program put into motion.
The council listened to the proposal and will vote on its adoption at the next meeting during Winter Quarter. Many council members were satisfied with the proposal and were glad it would soon be voted on.
The council also unanimously approved a list of new courses that will be added to the Women's Studies major's curriculum, including Women
Gender and Rock & Roll and Queer Theory. A list of core classes and departmental structure was presented in the proposal.
A proposal for simplifying and renaming physics was also presented. The proposal consists of renaming pre-astronomy as astrophysics, eliminating the preparation for an advanced training curriculum and modifying the requirements for the regular physics bachelor's degree.
The proposal guarantees that no other departments would be affected, except for students double majoring in physics. These students might need to take one additional physics course depending on their department's core requirements.
Members discussed and corrected possible conflicts with the proposal and will officially vote on it next quarter.
