OU construction 'progressing well'

Construction work across Ohio University's campus is getting to sophomore Julie Dougherty. From North Green's Putnam Hall and Burson House to West Green's Bicentennial Park and new student center, bulldozers and construction workers have been as regular a sight on campus as the students themselves.

I came here to get away from that

Dougherty said, comparing OU's usually scenic environment with the ever-present construction at Ohio State University. Hopefully it'll all turn into something nice.

From her Johnson Hall window, Dougherty looks toward Putnam Hall, home of the School of Dance. Orange fences and yellow construction tape surround the building. However, John Kotowski, vice president of Facilities Planning, said the work is progressing well and Putnam should open its doors at the beginning of Fall Quarter.

In the meantime, both the School of Dance, as well as Burson House's international studies faculty offices, have relocated to the Research and Technology Center.

Also under construction since Fall Quarter, Burson House will double in size by the time it opens.

We're a little behind Kotowski said, mainly because of the cold weather.

Workers have demolished much of the inside of the building but still need to work on the new additions.

Across campus, the Bicentennial Park is almost finished with weather playing a major role in its completion, according to Kotowski.

It's 95 percent seeded he said. And half has come in very well so far.

The park, located next to the new Lecture Hall, is scheduled for an April dedication ceremony. And the Lecture Hall, which opened to students this quarter, has had no significant problems to date.

It seems to be functioning pretty well

said Kotowski, also noting that the $14 million building will host more than 100 other non-class activities between now and graduation.
