With Halloween around the corner, Ohio University Student Senate is increasing its efforts to increase sexual-assault prevention and awareness.
Women’s Affairs Commissioner Victoria Calderon gave a presentation at last night's senate meeting on sexual-assault awareness, including stalking and dating violence. She also talked about the Survivor Advocacy Program, a confidential service for victims and survivors.
“The key is to know the people you surround yourself with,” Calderon said. “Women should be able to walk the streets at night without feeling danger at all.”
Senate Public Relations member Tony Koehling, who started the social-media campaign Lifelines of Safety, also spoke to senate about sexual assault.
Lifelines of Safety, modeled after popular game show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, provides students with information and help through a Twitter feed, @safetythOUghts, and a YouTube video, which Koehling said would be done before the end of Fall Quarter.
Koehling updated senate on the campaign since its Monday launch and showed senate the drafts of the flyers and posters that will publicize the campaign.
“Social media is such a key tool in our generation for getting the word out,” he said. “There’s no reason why we shouldn’t be using it.”
