Letter from the Editor: Giving Day helps us leave The Post better than we found it

As Giving Day approaches, I am filled with pride to be part of The Post, a publication that has been an essential part of Ohio University for over 100 years. Our legacy would not be what it is today without the continued support of alumni and donors who ensure future generations of Posties can leave their mark on this historic newsroom.

Giving Day allows us to do more than just write stories. It creates opportunities for hands-on learning that set The Post apart from other campus publications. Donations fund the experiences and tools that elevate our work, from networking trips to Washington, D.C., and New York City to the equipment we rely on every day, including cameras, microphones and tripods.

This year alone, The Post has published 3,250 stories and produced 66 videos, with a month left. We’ve taken 22 students to College Media Association conventions, where they toured organizations including Politico, National Journal, C-SPAN, The New York Times, NPR and Spectrum News.

These opportunities matter. They give our staff real-world experience and prepare them to step into careers in journalism, media and beyond. Our investment in multimedia equipment and a staff videographer position ensures Posties are learning the skills today’s industry demands.

The Post also earned six awards this year, with more expected to be announced. At the same time, we have raised $35,000 in advertising revenue to support daily operations. But Giving Day is what allows us to grow. Contributions from alumni, including the Laura Landro Solomon Fund, have had a lasting impact by helping expand our newsroom, invest in new technology and create meaningful opportunities for student journalists.

As I prepare to graduate this May, I am especially proud to have served as The Post’s first director of business strategy. In this role, I focused on building sustainable revenue, expanding advertising efforts and creating opportunities for students interested in the business side of media. It is a position that reflects how The Post continues to evolve, and one that would not exist without the support of Giving Day.

I’ve always tried to operate by the phrase, “leave it better than you found it,” and I believe that is exactly what Giving Day makes possible. Each contribution ensures the next generation of Posties has more opportunities, stronger resources and an even better newsroom than the one we inherited.

Giving Day is tomorrow, April 8, 2026. I encourage you to consider donating. Your support, no matter the size, directly impacts our ability to continue this work and ensures The Post remains a place where students learn, grow and lead.

Thank you for supporting The Post and helping us carry its legacy forward.

Best,

Abby Waechter
