Members of Faculty Senate meet on Feb. 2018.

Faculty Senate: Members to clarify faculty classifications in handbook

The Ohio University Board of Trustees will open Faculty Senate’s meeting Monday night, followed by resolutions from the Professional Relations Committee.

Ohio University Board of Trustees Chair Dave Scholl and Vice Chair Janelle Coleman will answers questions from faculty senators at the beginning of Monday’s meeting.

Two resolutions will be brought forward. The first resolution seeks to clarify the process for disqualification and recusal from the College Professional Ethics committees, while the second resolution clarifies the process for investigating and reviewing allegations of misconduct not involving sexual misconduct, discrimination or research misconduct.

According to the Professional Relations Committee resolution, when an allegation of a violation of professional ethics is received by the chair of the college Professional Ethics Committee, the committee chair will inform the members of the committee of the pending case. Any committee member who is from the same department shall be disqualified from service.

The third resolution proposes new names for faculty classifications. The current classification system has not been responsive to modifications or new types of faculty positions, so the language of the Faculty Handbook will be revised to include revised faculty classification.

“It is being presented as a ‘preview’ item, so that people can begin thinking about it prior to spring semester, when the formal process for approval will take place,” Faculty Senate Chair Joe McLaughlin said in an email.

At the meeting, Faculty Senate members will also be discussing the report of the Regional Higher Educations Study Group that was issued in early November.

The meeting will be held in Walter Hall 235 at 7:10 p.m. on Monday.
