Golfers hit the (Virginia) beach for MAC warm-up

There is nothing like going to the beach in the middle of Spring Quarter. Lucky for the Ohio women's golf team - they are heading to Virginia Beach for the Virginia Beach Intercollegiate Sunday and Monday.

The luck does not stop there. The tournament, hosted by Old Dominion, is at the TPC of Virginia Beach. The course, which is set up as a 5,821-yard par 72, is well known as a tourist destination and site of a Nationwide Tour's Virginia Beach Open.

The TPC, or Tournament Players Club, was built by famous course architect Pete Dye with consultation from PGA Tour professional and Virginia Beach native Curtis Strange. Ohio golf graduate assistant Jeff Hetler spoke with Old Dominion coach Pat Kotten who said at last week's JMU Invitational that the course would be set up easy compared to JMU. Kotten said Ohio should have no problem navigating the wide-open fairways.

This will be the last event for the Ohio women before the Mid-American Conference Championship April 23-25 in Indian Springs. Ohio coach Bob Cooley said the top four players - Cari Mozingo, Julie Tomlinson, Sara Ann Palmer and Ana Brown- have already locked up their positions for MACs, but the fifth position is still fair game for the remaining players. Performances this week will help Cooley decide on the final spot.

We've got to keep working on the short game

Cooley said. From what Jeff has told me we've been struggling in the area. But the main thing is to get some confidence in them and stay a little more positive.

Unfortunately for the Bobcats, they will not have time to hit the beach while in Virginia due to the timing of the tournament. It is the first Monday event they have played this season.

The 54-hole, eight-team Virginia Beach Intercollegiate begins Sunday at approximately 11 a.m. and concludes Monday with the second and third rounds. Monday tee times start at 8:30 a.m.
