The Ohio men’s golf team faced a formidable field at the Golfweek/Stifel Spring Challenge this week, navigating the demanding layout of the True Blue Golf Club in Pawley's Island, South Carolina. Competing against a dense NCAA Division I lineup, the Bobcats concluded the three-day event in 15th place with a cumulative score of 896 (+32). While the team standings reflected the difficulty of the course, the performance of freshman Rylan Hall served as a definitive highlight for the program.
Hall led the Bobcats with remarkable consistency across all 54 holes, carding rounds of 73, 71 and 72. His even-par total of 216 secured him a tie for 18th place, marking a significant milestone as his first career top 20 finish. Hall was particularly effective on the par fives, where he averaged a 4.73, and his 12 birdies over the tournament ranked among the best in the 90-player field. His second-round 71 was the lowest single-round score for any Ohio player during the event, demonstrating a level of composure that bodes well for the freshman’s trajectory.
Senior Nathaniel Gray Lamont provided steady support at the top of the lineup, finishing in a tie for 54th place with a total of 224 (+8). After an opening-round 77, Lamont surged back in the second round to match Hall’s 71, utilizing a sharp front nine that included three birdies. He closed the tournament with a 76, maintaining his role as a reliable veteran presence for the squad.
Sophomore Will Kates showed resilience throughout the week, rebounding from a difficult opening round to improve his score each day. Kates posted rounds of 76, 78 and 73 to finish at 227 (+11), placing him in a tie for 65th. His final-round 73 was bolstered by a disciplined front nine consisting of nine consecutive pars, proving his ability to adjust to the course's complexities under pressure.
The performance at the Spring Challenge is part of a busy 2025–26 campaign for Ohio. Earlier this spring, the team showed flashes of high-level competitive play at the Sweetens Cove Intercollegiate. In that bracket-style event, the Bobcats secured a 6th-place finish, highlighted by a dominant 4-2 victory over Northern Kentucky in the consolation rounds.
During that event, the team's depth was on display as players like Sam Hall and Rylan Hall both secured individual match victories. The transition from match play in Tennessee to the stroke play format in South Carolina tested the team’s adaptability. While the 15th-place finish in Pawleys Island was lower than hoped for, the consistent scoring from the Hall-led duo suggests the team is finding its rhythm at the right time.
Rounding out the Ohio lineup at True Blue were senior Carson Trafford and graduate student Sam Hall. Trafford finished with a three-day total of 231 (+15), highlighted by a final round featuring 14 pars. Sam Hall finished at 243 (+22), contributing to the team's tactical approach during a week where tournament winner Connecticut set a high bar at 15-under par.
The Bobcats' collective effort in the second round, where they posted a team score of +10, proved they can maintain pace with top-tier programs when their core scorers find their stride.
As the Bobcats head into the final stretch of the regular season, the focus remains on tightening the gap between their leaders and the rest of the pack. The Golfweek/Stifel Spring Challenge proved that Ohio possesses the talent to compete with the best in the region, particularly when its younger players produce top-tier results.
The Bobcats now turn their attention to the upcoming Muirfield Shootout on April 20 in Dublin, Ohio. This late-season stretch serves as a critical bridge to the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Tournament in early May. With the emergence of Rylan Hall as a legitimate front-runner and the steady improvement of the veteran core, the team looks to build momentum as they return to Ohio for their final regular-season contests.
