Waterline break soaks Bromley

Although forecasts predicted rain yesterday, some students in Bromley Hall were wet before they even stepped outside.

Maintenance crews worked all day to clean up after a waterline break caused flooding to sections of the third through seventh floors. Several rooms were affected on each floor, although it is not likely that any residents will be forced out of their rooms, said Ted Fares, director of engineering and technical support in the department of facilities management.

Roommates Matt Harvey and Brenden MacCredie, both Ohio University sophomores, live on the fifth floor of Bromley. Maintenance workers armed with ShopVacs came to their room around 11 a.m. to assess the situation in their suite.

It was trickling down the walls

MacCredie said.

It was worse next door Harvey said. Although they moved furniture away from the walls as a precautionary measure, the pair did not have any major inconvenience from the flooding.

After the water was removed, workers shampooed the carpets in the hallways, and fans aided the drying process. Some residents moved items from their flooded rooms into lobby areas.

It should be back to normal by tomorrow Fares said. Damages were minimal, although some residents were compensated for property loss.

Fares said the system in which the rupture occurred is under contract to be replaced this summer.
