An open letter to Jennifer Dietsch:
Thank you so much for saying the things you said. Every time I’ve been told personally (it happens a lot) or seen a letter to the editor about how annoying our fans at Ohio University are or how “we mock the other team” and are “very immature,” I get very excited because everything we do is for the team and aids the team in their pursuit of victory.
Everything you said, from “yelling ‘you suck (opposing team member’s names)’ to passionately supporting your team” is everything Ohio is about. Now I know you’ve probably never been to a college basketball game, but the things student sections do are very normal. We do everything necessary to help our team win.
I find it very funny that you are a BGSU alumna and attended the Valpo game at The Convo. I’d be interested to hear why you were even at the game in the first place. What’s even more funny is that you were offended by what the student section does. The band isn’t even allowed to curse. Saying “you suck” is only bad to say in church or bad for a 5-year-old, and we’ve been doing this stuff for at least 30 years.
College basketball isn’t like watching little kids play where we cheer for both teams, everyone loves everyone and we all get participation medals. Every game is a battle; you hate your opponent. You respect your opponent, but you hate his guts.
All I’m asking, with as much respect as possible, is that you get a clue Jennifer, and learn that it’s not all happy clouds and rainbows … It’s a battle.
