Two Ohio swimmers will compete against some of the best swimmers in the world this weekend at the FINA World Swimming Championships in Indianapolis.
Senior Irena Stavreska will represent her native Macedonia in the 50-meter freestyle and breaststroke events. She qualified by winning both events at the Macedonian National Swimming Championships last summer.
Stavreska is a three-year letterwinner for the Bobcats and was a member of last year's Mid-American Conference championship 200 freestyle relay.
Freshman Ilse Peterson will swim the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles for South Africa. She will also swim on the 400 and 800 freestyle relays. The Johannesburg native qualified with a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle at the South African National Swimming Championships.
Coach Greg Werner said he is excited to have two Ohio swimmers compete at this meet.
It is the highest honor an athlete can receive to represent their country
he said. I am very excited to see the results and how they perform at the meet.
Ohio assistant coach Brian Peresie will also serve as a coach for the Macedonian team.
The meet will get underway today and continue through Monday at Indianapolis' Conseco Fieldhouse, where as many as 100 employees have been working around the clock to construct a 25-meter competition pool and a warm-up pool.
United States Olympians Michael Phelps, Amanda Beard, Ian Crocker and Lindsey Benko will also compete.
ESPN2 will air same-day coverage Thursday, Saturday and Sunday and live action on Monday. 17
