Teenager reports fire at on-campus home; no one hurt in accidental blaze

Three members of the Athens Fire department view the result of a fire at 32 E. Carpenter St. Tuesday. Athens Fire Department Chief Bob Troxel said the fire did not cause any injuries. Firefighters extinguished the fire in 10 to 15 minutes. Troxel said he thinks the flames started in the living room and were accidental. Damage has been estimated at $50,000 on the structure and $15,000 on contents.

No one was in the home when the fire started. Only one resident lives in the house during the summer, Troxel said.

Joel Nichols, a 10th grader at Alexander High School, said he and his friends were riding their bikes back from the Athens state park when they saw smoke coming from the house. His friend, Mac Tabler, also in 10th grade, used Nichols' cell phone to call 911.
