Film Review: ‘Falling For Christmas’ marks the start of the holiday season

As the temperature drops and the winter months rapidly approach, there is no denying that Christmas is in the air. While there is nothing quite like settling in with a classic Christmas movie on a cold night, you might want to add Netflix’s new film, “Falling For Christmas” to your watchlist this holiday season.

When Sierra Belmont (Lindsay Lohan), the spoiled and newly engaged daughter of a hotel mogul, suffers from amnesia after a skiing accident, she is placed in the care of a widower, Jake Russel (Chord Overstreet), and his family at their small and financially unstable skiing lodge. As she tries to regain her memory, Sierra learns things she didn’t know about herself and helps Jake find joy in the world again. Together, the two of them might just be able to save the lodge in time for Christmas.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of this movie is the return of actress Lindsay Lohan to the screen. Lohan’s career has been full of personal and professional ups and downs, from “The Parent Trap” to “Means Girls”, and her return to the movie business has been long anticipated. This movie offers the exact kind of role she thrives in and was perfect for her charming return. Opposite Lohan is Chord Overstreet, known famously as Sam Evans on “Glee”, and his portrayal of the tortured, yet kindhearted, lodge owner offers a refreshing new side to his talent.

While the film’s writing left something to be desired, and all of the characters fit into a classic archetype of cheesy holiday movies; the overall atmosphere provided everything necessary to a great Christmas story. With the soundtrack of modern renditions of holiday classics, including some throwbacks to Lohan’s days of dancing to “Jingle Bell Rock” in a skin-tight Mrs. Claus outfit, gorgeous color composition and bright lights, “Falling For Christmas” is an exciting glimpse into what the upcoming months have in store.

“Falling For Christmas” is a completely predictable movie, where the ending of riches-to-rags being exactly what the protagonist needed to find true happiness can be seen from a mile away. While this may be true, and the film is almost identical to all other modern Hallmark movies, it doesn't stop the movie from bringing a smile to your face and being the exact kind of heartwarming story that makes this time of year so special.
