And who are you supposed to be?

Rarely do we laypeople get to see athletes outside of the realm of the sports they play. Rarely do we even see them off the field, court or rink, as the case may be. Because of this, we often fail to realize that they are people -people who eat the same food, read the same books and maybe even attend the same parties as us.

This week, with Halloween coming up, it's fitting to put the humanity back in our athletes, taking small glimpses into their personalities by finding out what costumes they plan on wearing this Saturday to Ohio's notorious street party. I took it upon myself to perform the investigation.

Cross country or cross gender?

Members of the cross country team -now you see 'em, now you don't. These members are always swift on their feet, which seldom drag. But do their costumes? Senior Patrick Harvey said he plans on wearing Britney Spears' flesh-colored body suit that she performed in during the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. Sometimes he runs, sometimes he cross dresses.

Crossing cultures

Field hockey team members dress as a class, said senior back Becky Lempke. She and her senior teammates are going as contestants on Spike TV's Extreme Elimination Challenge, she said.

Several junior members of the team -Erica Bundalo, Jennifer Cote, Chelsea Mearig and Megan Rentschler -are going Jamaican this year, feeling the rhythm as the 1988 Olympic bobsled team. But who's going to be John Candy?

Soccer stars

Senior midfielder Kendra Hornschemeier of the soccer team said she might be the spitting image of Marge Simpson this weekend. Hard to head a soccer ball with a tower of blue hair in the way.

Her teammate, junior Sara Williams, is dressing as Sandy from Grease

as she is reformed in the final scene, decked out in black leather.

They and Gina Siedentopf, who is set to dress as a cowgirl, may not go together like shama-lama-lama-whatever-they-say-in-the-movie, but you can bet they'll be kicking down the Halloween competition with their style.

I realize that there are myriad teams unaddressed in this article -the football and hockey teams unfortunately will be missing out on this year's fun, as they have games Saturday. But you can be sure that the remaining teams will be sporting their unique style and costume innovation Saturday, and maybe, if you're lucky, you'll see a hazy image of such sports stars, out of their traditional elements but still vigorously competing, this time for the best costume. 17
