Program helps students' job search

Students searching for a job after graduation can run into roadblocks, but the Bobcat Online Job Search Program run by Career Services can help to push through the barriers.

The program was created more than 10 years ago to assist students and alumni in their search for a job. Leslie Delerme, assistant director of Career Services, said Fall Quarter is the busiest time for the program and students interested in a job should register quickly. About 2,000 to 3,000 students register each year.

She said the program is updated throughout the year with new career opportunities and while most of these opportunities are in Ohio, there are plenty from other states. Delerme said the program offers a very broad range of positions in fields such as sales, finance and engineering.

In addition, the program provides students access to on-campus interviews with potential employers, Delerme said.

Employers say we have good quality students and are impressed with the candidates

she said.

Employers contact Career Services when they want to post job listings on the system for no charge. Delerme said Career Services also reaches out to employers to see if they want to be added to the system.

The office researches potential employers before they are put in the system, providing more security to students than national job search Web sites such as careerbuilder.com or monster.com.

In order to register for the program, Delerme said students must attend a 30-minute session where they receive a registration form and learn how to navigate the system.

Most students who utilize the system have no problem she said.

After completing the registration form, students pay a one-time administrative fee of $5, which covers the cost of the system and technological maintenance. Once the fee is paid their account will be activated, allowing them to create a profile and upload a resume, which Career Services can critique. Delerme said if a student does not have a resume, Career Services will help them create one, adding that the account can be used for up to six months after the student graduates.

Justin Clark, an electrical engineering major who graduated in the spring, used the program to help him find a job. Clark said he found it very useful and interviewed with two companies before accepting a job, which allowed him the opportunity to have a job lined up the December before he graduated. Clark said the program was definitely worth the $5 fee.

I would recommend this program to students but would also let them know that just because Career Services provides this resource that doesn't mean you won't have to work hard to find and get a job using it

Clark said. It is a wonderful tool to supplement your job search

but it is also important to be as proactive in the process as possible.
