Two more wins. That's all the Ohio women's basketball team needs to assure itself of a first-round home game in the Mid-American Conference Tournament.
The Bobcats' (12-13 overall, 6-8 MAC) first step toward another game in The Convo comes tomorrow, when the team travels to Huntington, W. Va., to play Marshall (14-11, 6-8 MAC).
The last time those two teams met, Jan. 10 in Athens, the Herd emerged with a convincing 86-63 win.
Since that last meeting, though, Ohio has built itself into a different team, finding a consistent starting lineup and playing a more fluid offense. The Bobcats are averaging 79 points per game during their last three games.
There's no question that when you hit shots
it makes everything easier assistant coach Shanele Stires said. We're really balanced and we don't have a superstar. Teams don't know who's going to get hot and they don't know who to shut down.
Nearly every Ohio player has recorded at least one double-digit scoring performance this season, including four such performances against Eastern Michigan.
The win against the Eagles was the Bobcats' sixth in the MAC, putting them very close to the eight conference victories Ohio coach Lynn Bria thought would be needed to assure a first-round home game.
I've felt like from the get-go
before we started the conference
if you can get to eight wins
you're going to host
Bria said.
Should the Bobcats win both Saturday at Marshall and Tuesday at Buffalo, they would find themselves in that exact position: eight MAC wins, a third-place finish in the East Division, and a first-round home game for the conference tournament.
The Bobcats take the next step on their road back to The Convo at 1 p.m. Saturday in Marshall's Cam Henderson Center.
