Week nine. It’s over. We’re inching closer. Closer to what, I’m not sure. But we’re on our way.
The past week was a busy one. We saw Ohio University’s wrestling team head off to the NCAA tournament where it had a strong first day of competition. With six wrestlers in the tournament, it’s a record-setting year for the program.
Tony Wolfe has been heading up coverage of the team, including profiles of Harrison Hightower and Jeremy Johnson this week. In a sporting world dominated by football and basketball, sports like wrestling can go unrecognized for their achievements. Wish them and the rest of the team the best of luck.
Speaking of basketball, Ohio’s men’s basketball team extended its postseason run into the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. Led by Stevie Taylor, the team scraped by Cleveland State on Wednesday and will take on Wright State on Saturday in The Convo.
I admittedly have limited experience within the realm of sports, but it seems as if participating in the tournament hasn’t been the smoothest of sailing for Ohio. Athletics doled out $36,000 to host a game in a tournament other programs declined to compete. The players were so excited to participate that a redshirt senior left the team. Fans were equally enthusiastic, filling The Convo up to its lowest attendance of the season.
The team won, though, and that’s not nothing. We’ll see how many people forgo High Fest and the forecasted rain for the team’s sobering play come Saturday.
Speaking of fests, there will likely be some rough waters ahead for college parties. Local law enforcement is considering asking Athens City Council to enact an ordinance that would add additional responsibility to “social hosts” to ensure that the people at their gathering are of legal drinking age.
Graduate Student Senate President Joel Newby told students about the possible proposal, though he said it’s “going to be a thing.” The announcement immediately raised a number of concerns to us. We spent all of Thursday and will spend the weekend doing more reporting to find answers to those questions. Look for a comprehensive report on Monday.
