Episode six of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ challenges Daredevil, Kingpin

The sixth episode of “Daredevil: Born Again” (2025-present) is titled “Requiem,” which means, according to Google, “a Roman Catholic Mass for the dead (a Requiem Mass) or a musical composition honoring the deceased.”

A literal funeral does occur in the episode. Vanessa Fisk (Ayelet Zurer) is laid to rest by her former husband, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio). With nothing left to lose, Fisk lets the Anti-Vigilante Task Force move Mr. Charles’ (Matthew Lillard) weapons to their own warehouse.

Mr. Charles sends his own men to attack Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) at her home because she turned down an offer to work with him. Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and Jessica join forces again, go to the AVTF warehouse and destroy their weapons.

Buck Cashman (Arty Froushan) tells Daniel (Michael Gandolfini) to feed BB Urich (Genneya Walton) false information, and Buck also encourages Dr. Heather Glenn (Margarita Levieva) to intimate Muse’s actions to him.

Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) nearly kills Bullseye (Wilson Bethel), but is stopped by Daredevil. In response, she berates Matt for allowing criminals like Bullseye and Fisk to still be alive despite how many lives they have ruined.

BB decides not to leak the information and tries to kiss Daniel on his birthday. However, Daniel rejects her advances and confronts her about previous leaks. He warns that he cannot keep her safe from Buck anymore.

Later on, Page, in disguise, joins a protest outside where Fisk’s mayoral office is. She projects testimonies from the former Red Hook prisoners for everyone to see. Meanwhile, Daredevil meets with Fisk and proposes that both men should leave the city so that there’s peace.

Enraged by his wife’s death, Fisk denies and begins fighting Daredevil. Although bloodied and bruised, Daredevil wins and lets Fisk live.

During the protest, AVTF Officer Connor Powell (Hamish Allan-Headly) kills Officer Saunders (Felix Torrez-Ponce) after finding out he was going to betray the task force. Powell blames vigilantes for Saunders’ death and orders excessive force upon the protestors.

Amidst the chaos, Karen’s identity is revealed, and Powell holds her at gunpoint as the episode concludes on a cliffhanger.

Likewise to the Netflix “Daredevil” (2015-2018) show, “Daredevil: Born Again” excels when it deals with tough but thoughtful moral questions.

The most memorable moments from the original series are when Matt is often questioned about his sense of justice and his strict no-kill rule. Fisk, Frank Castle/the Punisher (Jon Bernthal) and to an extent, Karen are OK with taking lives, but Matt cannot due to his Catholic morality and his wanting to believe in the justice system.

In season three of “Daredevil,” the most memorable scenes have Matt, whether he’s in lawyer mode or vigilante mode, discussing and sometimes arguing about what is right and wrong with others.

These can cause rifts between friends like Karen and Franklin “Fogg” Nelson (Elden Henson), and further isolate Matt from a sphere he’s grown to love. Similarly, with the death of his wife, Fisk is in a situation like Matt's.

Both men have experienced tragic losses in their lives, and in this episode, Matt, as Daredevil, proposes to Fisk that each of them should leave New York City for the betterment of others. Still enraged and saddened by Vanessa’s death, Fisk obviously denies Matt’s suggestion.

However, it does generate an interesting theory of how this season could conclude. D’Onofrio’s Kingpin has been the central villain for four out of five seasons of Daredevil television. Cox, as the titular hero, isn’t going away soon, but it could be time for a departure for D’Onofrio.

It’s only fitting for the themes of this season. Plus, Daredevil does need to face new enemies if “Daredevil: Born Again” is going to continue for more seasons.
