Dawson said the senate has failed to promote shared governance and to produce action after the students' vote of no confidence in McDavis.
I can no longer offer my legitimacy to a process that is inherently ineffective and counterproductive Dawson said.
Dawson did not attend the meeting last week in which Students for a Democratic Society proposed a resolution that was ultimately not accepted by Student Senate. The organization's resolution called for the student trustees to resign in protest of the Board of Trustee's proposed presidential evaluation policy. Senate passed its own resolution, expressing dissatisfaction with the lack of constituent input in annual evaluations.
Dawson also said she disliked being asked to dress up for senate meetings.
I came into senate dressed like my constituency but was ordered to dress like a bureaucrat in training she said. The student who received the next most votes in the senate elections last spring will replace Dawson as senator-at-large, Senate President Tim Vonville said.
It's unfortunate that she didn't feel as if Student Senate had the ability to make change
Vonville said.
Senators also debated a resolution to change the rules regarding members of the student trustee selection committee. The resolution proposed adding the president of Graduate Student Senate and a faculty member to the committee.
Senate Vice President Amanda Roder, who is in charge of the committee, said the change is an attempt to make the rules for committee makeup the same between the Board of Trustees and Student Senate. If the resolution were passed by the Senate, Roder said that she and the student trustees would draft a resolution to bring to the Board of Trustees in April, prompting a change in their rules.
Although not a member by senate policy, Graduate Student Senate President Dominic Barbato has participated in the committee's activities so far.
After many senators raised questions, Academic Affairs Commissioner Chris Diehl moved to indefinitely postpone voting on the resolution.
Roder agreed to answer questions and discuss the resolution with those who voted in favor of postponement.
