The Ohio baseball team has been picked to win the Mid-American Conference East Division and advance to the NCAA Tournament this year in the latest issue of Baseball America magazine.
The Bobcats have also been picked to finish second in the MAC East Division behind rival Miami by MAC coaches.
Ohio finished the 2003 season 35-23 overall and 15-11 in the MAC.
The Bobcats return first-team All-MAC players pitcher Marc Cornell and catcher Ben Crabtree.
Ohio will open the 2004 season at 3 p.m. on Feb. 20 with a three-game series against Western Kentucky.
Baseball coach to be inducted into the Great Lakes League Hall of Fame
Ohio baseball coach Joe Carbone will be among six charter members inducted into the Great Lakes League Hall of Fame.
The induction ceremony will take place at the Great Lakes League All-Star Game on Sunday, July 18, at Littick Field at Ohio Wesleyan University.
Carbone was the general manager and manager of the Columbus All-Americans when the league formed in 1986.
He led the All-Americans to the first league championship.
Carbone joins current Cleveland Indians manager Eric Wedge, MVP for Lima Locals in 1987, Jerry DiCuccio, founding owner of the Columbus All-Americans and Lou Laslo, Ron Miller and Gary Henschen, who are attributed as the founding fathers of the summer league, which started with six teams and now has 11.
Carbone is also a member of the Tioga County Athletic Hall of Fame where he lettered in soccer, basketball and baseball at Elkland High School in Elkland, Pa.
Ohio football to announce recruits Wednesday
The Ohio football team will announce its recruits for the 2004 season today during National Signing Day.
The Bobcats are expected to sign between 18 and 22 players for the upcoming season.
Ohio soccer receives team academic award
The Ohio women's soccer team earned the National Soccer Coaches of America (NSCAA) Academic Award for the 2002-2003 school year.
Team members posted a 3.21 team GPA during the season.
Our team has done well traditionally in the last couple of years
among the best in the athletic department said soccer coach Stacy Strauss. It is a priority for the team to make sure they stay in line with their academic responsibilities.
Seven other MAC teams also received this honor for success in the classroom.
The awards were presented at the College Coaches Luncheon in the middle of January during the 57th annual NSCAA Convention in Charlotte, N.C.
