TV Review: Sam and Dean hustle pool to win back their good luck on ‘Supernatural’

Last week’s episode of Supernatural was a lighter episode in the season. Garth Fitzgerald IV (DJ Qualls) helped Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) while their luck ran out. During the latest episode, Sam and Dean meet the Greek goddess of luck while Cas (Misha Collins) brings Jack (Alexander Calvert) back home. Here’s a recap of the episode if you couldn’t watch:

Sam and Dean hustle pool

Per Garth’s advice, the boys head to a magical pool hall where those down on their luck go to take their chances. The rules are simple: You don’t play with money, and you buy in with luck, which transfers onto a coin. If you win a game, the loser’s luck carries over to your coin. You can keep playing until your luck runs out, meaning death.

Dean even mentions the rabbit's foot in the third season’s third episode, where Sam is cursed with bad luck and loses his shoe.

Dean is confident in his pool hustling skills. He tells Sam, “Man, I’ve been slinging pool cues since before you were born.” Sam replies with, “What? When you were 4? Really?”

Also, it is noticeable that even with their bad luck, Sam and Dean are remarkably good at pool, meaning that Chuck has nothing to do with it.

Dean manages to play and beat a few patrons in the hall, but when Dean tests out his luck on Baby, the car still stalls. Sam and Dean figure out that that the female face on the coin takes a cut from the luck gained, so those who play have to play more to gain more luck. The female face turns out to be Fortuna (Lynda Boyd), the Greek goddess of luck. Fortuna challenges Sam to a game, playing for luck, which he wins. She challenges him to a double-or-nothing game, but Sam’s terms include freeing everyone in the hall. Everyone playing is stuck there and can’t stop playing until their luck runs out.

Sam loses but both Sam and Dean manage to walk away from the hall without getting cursed or dying. Suddenly, everyone is walking out of the hall. Apparently Fortuna shut the operation down because the brothers reminded her of heroes, a way of life she thought was dead. Evie (Hanneke Talbot), the bartender, hands Sam the coin, so Sam and Dean both have their luck back.

Cas saves Jack

Cas returns from Heaven only to pick up a phone call from Sheriff Jeb Evans (Kahlil Ashanti), who was looking for Dean because someone that Dean was looking for a year turned up. Cas, without missing a beat as Agent Lizzo, picks up the case. According to the sheriff, there’s a video of Jack killing a doctor and eating his heart. When Cas finds Jack, Cas discovers that Jack killed a Grigori and saves Jack from being killed by another one.

Back at the bunker, the reunion between the brothers and Jack is beautiful. The audience could almost taste the family bonding. Jack informs Sam, Dean and Cas that Billie gave him clear instructions on how to become stronger and, in the end, kill God.

The episode’s ending is warm. There is no dramatic and scary cliffhanger. The past two episodes have felt optimistic.

Starting March 16, Supernatural airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on The CW.
