Wrestling coach adds extra meat to victory

Ohio assistant wrestling coach Brian Scislo is coming off one of his more successful weeks in recent memory. The Post's Kyle Jepson sat down to talk with Scislo about coaching, Ohio wrestling and his most recent achievement - winning a hamburger-eating contest.

The Post: Tell me about the hamburger-eating contest after the Wendy's Duals.

Scislo: I did win the hamburger-eating contest. I actually crushed the competition; everybody else had at least two bites left. But I can't take all the credit. Help was given by (Ohio wrestler) Jake Percival. He really encouraged me to chew and drink water. So I have to give him some credit.

The Post: Did you feel any pressure because the team had gone 3-0 in competition earlier in the day?

Scislo: Yeah, I definitely didn't want to ruin the day. And it really brought me back to the days of competition when I used to wrestle in college.

The Post: Where does this rank in your list of all-time achievements?

Scislo: It's pretty big. I don't think it's anything like the national finals, but it's definitely pretty big.

The Post: I understand you're not fond of Iowa high school wrestling. Is this true?

Scislo: Who the heck - where did that come from? Oh my Lord. No, no, no, that's not what I said. I was in a discussion with someone, and he tried to tell me that Iowa high school wrestling was the best thing there ever was. And I'm like, wait, wait, wait. I'm like, Iowa high school wrestling is good, and of course Iowa collegiate wrestling is really good. But he was just totally downplaying the strength of Ohio in high school wrestling. And that's all I was saying. I wasn't saying that it was bad; I was just sticking up for Ohio.

The Post: Can anyone on this Ohio wrestling team beat you right now?

Scislo: No comment.

The Post: Would you rather see a team win a conference championship or an individual win a national championship?

Scislo: Oh, man, that's an interesting question. I don't know. There're positives in both aspects. I guess a conference championship is great in the respect that the whole team works towards that, and they accomplish it together as a team. But on the other hand, initially you think, OK

the individual championship this guy did it himself. That's not necessarily the case. Things don't happen in a vacuum. He wasn't in the wrestling room by himself for a year and that's how he got good. He had the whole team pushing him and he was pushing the whole team to get better.
