Local libraries will offer free lunches this summer

The Nelsonville Public Library, in conjunction with the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation of Nelsonville, will be offering a free lunch service at area libraries to help low-income families in need of assistance.

The need is greater this year because many are unemployed because many companies have pulled out [of the area]

said Mary Jo Parsley, public relations librarian for the Nelsonville Public Library system.

She also said the library is a service organization and therefore has a responsibility to assist the community in any way it can.

The program will run from June 14 to July 14.

All people between the ages of one and 18 are eligible to receive free lunch. Items such as pizza and fruit are a part of the menu. Lunch will be served beginning at noon and will go until all the food available for the day is gone. Participants are not allowed to take any food home, Parsley said.

The program will operate through the Tri County Community Action Agency's Meals on Wheels program to help feed the expected 2,070 participants.

The library received a $6,000 grant from the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation of Nelsonville. The overall program is expected to cost about $7,000. The library will cover the remaining costs, Parsley said.

The free lunch program will be available at the Nelsonville, Glouster, Chauncey and Coolville libraries. Lunch will be served Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Nelsonville and Coolville libraries. On Mondays and Wednesdays, lunch will be served at the Glouster library and Monday through Thursday at the Chauncey library.

This is the seventh year the Nelsonville public library has offered this program. 17
