Ohio pitcher shows flashes of old in 11-3 win

Any time Ohio pitcher Marc Cornell takes the mound, heads turn.

And, finally, last night he took the mound and showed shades of the past that fans had come to expect out of him.

Cornell displayed resiliency in a rebounding effort amid the flurries at Youngstown State in an 11-3 victory for the Bobcats - Cornell's first win of the season.

The last time Cornell started, he gave up eight runs in only three innings. This time, zero runs in five innings.

All in all

he pitched a pretty good game coach Joe Carbone said. Right now we got him out of there so we can rest him for Sunday in relief.

Cornell threw only 68 pitches before being pulled, allowing four hits and striking out five. Yale Silverman came in to finish the game, allowing five hits in the relief effort.

Now, the Bobcats are looking for Cornell's effort to be a microcosm of things to come.

A week ago, Ohio dropped its first non-conference game in more than three weeks. But with the team healthy, Cornell's effort can only be seen as a good sign for the future.

Ohio looks forward to Rio Grande today before facing Western Michigan Saturday in what could be a crucial series for the Bobcats' playoff hopes. Ohio has won only one conference series all season and finds itself looking up at the current playoff contenders.

What we have with our team is that we've been getting pretty good pitching

Carbone said. But we don't have enough runs scored so if we make a mistake

we can't overcome it... We played pretty well today

though. We just have to play like that all the time.

Providing the offense for the Bobcats were outfielder Willie Walker and infielder Bryant Witt. Each tallied two hits, which resulted in not only RBIs, but also runs scored.

The Bobcats return to the field today at home against instate opponent Rio Grande. Zeke Isaacs gets the start, but several pitchers will be used, Carbone said. The game is set to start at 5 p.m. at Bob Wren Stadium.
