A different player has stepped up for Ohio in every game so far in conference play, but yesterday it took a trio of guards to seal the Bobcats' victory.
Guards Jennifer Poff, Quintana Ward and Lauren Kohn combined for 53 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists, including a career-high 15 points and seven assists from Poff. Ward tied a career-high with 16 points and Kohn added 22 points and nine rebounds.
We got a lot of leadership from our guard position tonight
coach Sylvia Crawley said. With this team it's hard to figure out who to stop.
The Bobcats earned their third straight victory by defeating Akron 78-64. It is the longest such streak for the Bobcats on the season.
We've been a little inconsistent Ward said. We have all the wheels turning right now
and we're trying to roll with it.The win was Ohio's 14th straight win over Akron (5-14, 0-5 Mid-American Conference) dating back to 2001 and extended the Zips' losing streak to nine games. The Bobcats' win, combined with Bowling Green's loss at home to Miami yesterday, put the team just one game behind the Falcons for first place in the division.
We knew they were hungry for a win
Poff said. This is the time of year when we know that we have to step up.The Bobcats went ahead early in the game and never relinquished their lead. But the 483 fans in attendance might have squirmed a little when the Zips put a late run on Ohio (10-8, 3-2 MAC).
The Bobcats had their biggest lead of the ballgame at 60-39 with just over ten minutes to play when they let the Zips come back, letting them score when the clock wasn't moving.
Ohio committed 14 fouls in the second half, including ten in the first ten minutes of the half, and saw their lead dwindle to 11 with less than five minutes to play.
But thanks to Ohio's inside-out game of Chandra Myers and the three guards, that's as close as the Zips would get. Myers consistently got the ball inside and kicked it back out to the open guard, which helped the MAC's leading 3-point shooting team to shoot 10-22 from beyond the arc.
If our players had it their way
every shot would be a 3-pointer
Crawley said. I like that we have different players that are able to step up.
