Golfer Sara Ann Palmer is a staple in the Ohio women's golf team lineup with a 79.86 spring scoring average despite undergoing a swing overhaul. The Post's Laurie Duffy sat down with Palmer to discuss the changes in her swing and their benefits.
The Post: You changed your swing over the summer. What has the process been like?
Palmer: Well, I changed in the beginning of August. I switched pros. I still wasn't completely prepared for the season with my new swing, so I kind of had half-old swing, half-new swing when I started. It really wasn't my best because I was still trying to make changes, but I worked all winter and went to Myrtle Beach and played some too. Now I finally just got it, and now its all going into place. I'm hitting it farther and more accurate.
The Post: Does that improve your confidence now that you're starting to play more consistently?
Palmer: Oh definitely. My shots are a lot more accurate to the green. I'm outdriving every single girl I play with, which just gives you more confidence because you're out there further. And I'm not missing many fairways, and that gives me a lot of confidence.
The Post: What has been the most difficult part of the change?
Palmer: It's pretty much a lot of the mental because you're constantly thinking, Am I doing this or am I doing that? And you're just trying to get the confidence while trying to not revert back to your old ways. You're trying to keep the new ways and keep them progressing and keep thinking you're going to be okay in the end. Just getting to that point seems to be the hardest part.
The Post: If you could tell recreational golfers one thing about improving their games, what would it be?
Palmer: I would say that it's mainly mental - just keep your head in the game. And stay down on the ball - that's what I tell my mom. Stay down on the ball because everyone's always flying up. That's the main thing. And always stay positive because if you're negative, you're never going to do well.
